Beatles Song Countdown: 150-146

150: Yes It Is

Album: Past Masters, Volume 1
Writer: Lennon
Singer: Lennon

Verdict: A valiant effort by John. It just never quite hits its stride and I’m never all that comfortable listening to it.

149: You Can’t Do That

Album: A Hard Day’s Night
Writer: Lennon
Singer: Lennon

Verdict: John was good at writing songs about jealousy, though this is his weakest. I enjoy the rhythm quite a bit, but not everything works. “I think it’s a sin?” feels like a forced lyric just to make things rhyme, and the backing vocals don’t add anything either. George’s guitar riff is the best part for sure.

148: Revolution 1

Album: The Beatles
Writer: Lennon
Singer: Lennon

Verdict: The slowed-down bluesy version of Revolution. I much prefer the harder rock single. I’ve never been a big fan of “shoo-bee doo wop” and certainly not in a song like this one. I think it’s neat that in this version John says “you can count me out, in,” indicating his reservations about a full out revolution.

147: Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

Album: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Writer: Lennon
Singer: Lennon

Verdict: I love that John wrote a song based on a drawing of his son’s. I enjoy the psychedelic lyrics. But the singing grates on me. It appears John agreed with me, as he said this was a poor performance of his.

146: For You Blue

Album: Let It Be
Writer: Harrison
Singer: Harrison

Verdict: As usual for George, a very simple song, but one that’s right in his voice’s wheelhouse. Pleasant enough, though I think John’s guitar work is fairly uninspired and there’s just not enough there for me to love it.
