The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

Year: 1988
Director: David Zucker

Summary: Leslie Nielsen stars as Police Squad’s own granite-jawed, rock-brained cop Frank Drebin, who bumbles across a mind-control scheme to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson, a stuffed beaver, two baseball teams and an odd assortment of others join the wacko goings-on and blow the laugh-o-meter to smithereens.

Times Watched: 3

My Experience: I’ve seen this as a teenager and an adult, and I think I laughed about the same amount each time, though perhaps on different jokes. Zucker is pretty great at slapstick. Nielsen is great too, and he’s at his best when being directed by Zucker. Even sophomoric jokes (“thanks, I just had it stuffed!”) go over well because of how well its directed. Nielsen’s turn at umpire during the Angels game is classic.

I just noticed something in that scene. At one point we see one of the players hit a grand slam, as four guys are running around the bases. But at no point does the scoreboard show anything higher than two runs scored in an inning. Whoops.

  1. Such a fun movie. Haven’t seen it in awhile, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it was such a joy to sit back and laugh at. Nice review.

  2. I’ve seen this a kajillion times. I still laugh just as hard. I could probably watch this with Mariana soon.

I often do impressions of the old, deadpan driving instructor.
