Seven Pounds

Year: 2008
Director: Gabriele Muccino

Summary: The emotional story of a man who will change the lives of seven strangers

Times Watched: 2

My Experience: I saw this in the theater of Christmas Day with my dad. I loved the fact that the trailer gave nothing away. I love further that the first hour of the movie, you’re watching Smith do many bizarre things that only make sense to him. There is virtually no exposition in the film. While that obviously left me in the dark for a while, Smith’s performance is top-notch. He plays his usual tortured protagonist character, but this performance stood out to me a little more than others.

Unfortunately, once I learned what was going on, I was disappointed. Nah, I take that back. In the theater I was like “Hells yes, that’s awesome.” But just an hour or two of rolling the plot in my head afterwards kind of ruined it. The reveal relies on so much bad science and blind luck that the high-drama didn’t stay with me.

That said, it’s still entertaining just to watch Smith do his thing. So when it was on TV a couple of months ago, I left it on.

  1. I forgot this existed. It may still be on my Netflix disc queue, going nowhere because I’ve had the same movie at home for about seven months.

      • I’m good about them with TV shows. I actually go through a ton of them when I get a few at a time. We had switched to one at a time a while ago and it’s been a disaster. It’s only enough that I feel like I have to do the heady stuff, but I’m often not in the mood for it.
